No much time to do updates...URECA semi-deadline in 10 days, COM3881 report by this Sunday, presentation next wednesday, need to formulate script for COM3731, do group project proposal for MGT1020 and there's a new case analysis coming for DSE4190...this is mad. simply mad.
My timetable: Slack mondays, overloaded and stressed wednesdays and thursday and a simply skippable tuesdays and fridays. 5-days week. SUX.
It took quite a while to set in, but we had to accept the fact. Another friend of mine had passed on.
Even though we weren't the closet of friends, but the memories live on. I felt helpless here when such things had to happen. I couldn't express my feelings, nor can I hide it.
Our paths will never cross again, but you have definitely left a trail.
This time round, we saw raceS. We bet, we lost. Haha...and redeemed ourselves with sourveniers which we had to hoop rings and throw balls to win...lolx..it was fun! And thanks to the staff who let us HAVE what we wanted...=p
Another trip organised by the OAL; this time it is to Lantau Island. We visited Tai O fishing village and saw a really nice and peaceful village-like environment that seems to be unaltered by tourism. Nice lunch, even though the SG clique was separated as some of us took longer to take photos at the kelong...and Alvin (yes, him again) woke up damn late and missed the bus transport there and he had to take KCR, MTR and then bus all the way there himself, meeting us only after lunch. We found a nice tasting Dao Hui stall outside the restaurant and everyone swarmed it..there was even dao hui mixed with black sesame paste (though it looked weird so I didn't try). And then there was Cha Guo (which absolutely suck, don't ever try it, it simply has a bizarre taste).
After Tai O, it was onto the Big Buddha. Yes, I swore I would never climb that greaking flight of stairs ever again in my life. And guess what. But well, with the construction of the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, they built a whole new "village" with souvenier shops, cafes and what-nots and basically spoilt the whole environment there. And the buddha was still sort of acting cute, shroudded by clouds again...but it was better than in 2004.
At the end of the tour, we didn't want to head back so early, so we decided to head to Tung Chung for factory outlets and then to Kwai Fung (which resembled so much like Far East) which Louise recommended for some shopping...Damn was it a tired but fulfilling day.
Yes, finally savoured the Dai Pai Dong in HK (aka Zi Cha). We heard of this common hangout for CUHK students in Fo Tan Industrial Area, which was one station away from our university, and so we decided to check it out. But alas, everyone pointed us in different directions! Siao liao..in the end had to ask all around, almost wondered into a private estate and finally called Jeff for help.
Once we reached the area, with about 5 different stalls lined up, we were swarmed by the people touting for business. Overwhelmed. No, that's an understatement. Terrified would be a better word. Moreover, for me, it was just a string of loud noise which had no meaning (Canto rem?). So we dedcided to settle on the 1st stall which offered free chicken porridge and Lai Liu Ha (濫尿蝦) with a set meal..so well, we sat down. It was so TVB..I tell you..we even had a nearby table with people raising their voices and Alvin was so worried that the next moment, tables will be flipped and parangs would start coming out...HAHAHAHAHAHA
And yes, I finally got to eat my Yu Gap (roasted pigeon) which according to Angie, is not all that great (Long Wah at Shatin is better) but nonetheless, it was a satisfying meal. Though we felt that the Zi Cha at tai Po Market was more worthwhile and better tasting.
PS. Later I got treated to another stall down the roll and it did taste a lot better, but it was more expensive though and it would be good to get treated for it, not to go for it yourself..hahaa..
Haha..finally went over to the mainland again...with Jinsheng, Huimin, Angie and Louise (from OAL). Not sure if I mentioned this, but there has been a slight crack in the SG clique over here and yah...so even though there were plans made, things played out differently. But well, nonetheless, it was enjoyable. Though I expected it to be more of a shopping trip, but Louise being a good host planned a touist route for us..haha. We ended up at Shi Jie Zhi Chuang or Window to the world, where there are miniatures of famous landmarks in the world.
Stupid me, left my camera battery charging in my room and headed up north. Damn..haha..so the photos here are all either taken using Angie's camera or using my N70, which obviously pales in comparison. Moreover, it was drizzling all the way and the sky was really dark. It wasn't that much fun for me, considering that I have been to the real deal for most of them (oops..heh). And not to forget the stupid flume ride that wet my jeans all the way through, top to bottom, inside out. And imagine the cool weather that went it...how fun was it for me...
One thing about Shenzhen though, everything they also copy..even the MTR there...logo copy, system map copy, but one hilarious thing is that the english version of their train announcement are pronounced as the chinese words like "Next station is Shi1 Jie1 Zhi1 Chuang1"...and they have weird slogans on the LED display like "Prudence is good","Be fiflial" etc...so typical of a communist nation, still.
Photos:
And we did managed to do a little shopping (potato chips) and some bags and wallets for the gals at Lao Jie. I bought some DVDs as well, but we were in a mad rush to get back to celebrate Alvin's 23rd birthday, so I only managed to grab a little bit of snacks along the street (Bubble Tea, Fried Sotong, Tako Pachi) and I was famished when I reached I-house. But of course, I don't expect them to leave food la..but haha..I did get the leftover wanton soup and not forgetting the birthday cake! Hahaha..
One of the few things that a tourist has to do in HK is to visit the racecourse and that was exactly what we did. Shatin Racecourse, being so near to us, is definitely in our list of must-visit. But good ol' procrastinating us ended up going there quite late...but just managed to go into the grand stand area and hear the bell ring for the last round of races...and within 90 seconds, it was all over. LOL...no thrill! We told ourselves that we have to go back again..earlier. So we just romaed around the jockey club to find everyone packing up and leaving (last KCR leaves Racecourse station 1 hour after the last race) and so we just grabbed a few photos and left.
A view of the Shatin Jockey Club:
Then what's next? Mongkok. Again. Hahahaa...it's like JP to NTU...anyway, I finally got to eat my Xiu Liu Shan! Heard so much about it and now then can eat...damn. Nice sia..especially that 多芒小丸子 which is what I have been eating ever since.
After visiting Tai Po market by myself 2 days ago, decided to suggest going there for dinner. Since it was quite some time ago since we had a nice meal..so yah..and the food was delicious..kinda make us miss home...and Alvin got to know Angie better through the common topic of alcohol..haha...and he got drunk a little when he drank beer on an empty stomach..lolx...and since that day, Angie has been suan-ing him nonstop about anything and everything...hahaaaa...no that his bad analogies are helping...
Dinner was done and the night was still early, so we headed to Mongkok's Hua Yuan Jie for some bargain hunting. And I got myself two pairs of jeans...yeah!
Just when I complain about the heat, it started raining since yesterday night. It has been continuously drizzling till now, and the whole CUHK is totally fogged up...a bit sian lei like that...no mood for anything...
It is not me who's whining, but look at the climatological information. The mean temperature is supposed to be 15 degrees...argghhh...my bermudas are coming out of the closet soon...
But i guess the only good thing about the day is the clear view I am getting here...true beauty out there...
Decided to take some time alone..and went to explore Tai Po..one station on KCR from Univeristy, but towards Lou Wu..it was quite a densely populated reidential area, and there is this Uptown Plaza that links directly to an estate on its 4th level..cool...and the Tai Po Market is basically a wet market with a cooked food centre on the 2nd level, much like any markets we have in Singapore like Golden Shoe...
Sports Stadium..something I won't ever use...did I mention CUHK is the only university in HK (I belive in the world) which makes PE compulsory for its students...siao...
The lake...(like NTU huh? hahaa..)
And I must have looked damn shagged when I tried to walk up all the way back to hall that someone told me there was a bus...yes I know, but I want to walk..dammit..haha..and I regret it ever since...I swear I will take the bus from now on, HKD1 is dirt cheap to walk back up...and I won't mind the wait...
And dinner was cooked by Jinsheng...but we stayed slightly overdue at Liling's hall and almost got chased out..haha...blame the stupid stove which does not heat up properly...
Okay, I am finally up to date with my entries...I so need to update my URECA project now..it's long overdue!!!
Yeah! Finally had Yum Cha, the traditional kind where they push the trolley around, yeah they still have it, thanks to the recommendation of Yongsheng, we headed out on Sunday morning to have a look! Anyway, was waiting for them at the KCR station when two people suddenly pop up to try and get me to join church..weird...
That aside, the dim sum was real nice lar, but the wait was a horrible nightmare. We took some time to find the place and when we got there, it was FULL, yes full to the brim. And it turns out that everyone at each table dun know each other and are all sharing tables...and they are fast and furious when grabbing seats. We were thinking about letting them clear the tables before sitting down when our seats were just grabbed up by others under our noses!!
Anyway, when in Rome,do what the Romans do and so we adpated and finally squeezed into a seat. And Alvin was damn fast in learning the ropes or fighting through the crowd to get the dim sum we wanted! Hahaa...and in all we spent only like HKD62 per person..and we are like the only ones eating like hungry ghosts as the locals would usually eat only 1 or 2 items and sit to drink tea..yes Yum Cha..only...or read newspaper...hahahaa
Lian Xiang Lou...
Menu...
Siew Mai, Ha Gao and Feng Zhua!!!
Yvonne and Suqin (with her must-have Char Siew Bao...it was good)
Alvin...the Yum Cha hero!
Alvin :: Yvonne :: Suqin :: Yum-cha uncle (cute!) :: Me :: Yongsheng :: Random stuff...
After that, we walked around, basically from Central to Causeway Bay, yes again..but it was with a different group of people so it's fun anywayz...
Contrast...Progress and Way of Life
Bamboo Scaffold...
On the tram again...but cam-whoring..lolz
Causeway Bay..again...
Really nice wanton mee at besides Times Square, it was just fresh juicy prawn inside the skin, nothing else..yummy!!!
And my 1st clothing purchase in HK..this cool jacket with hood...haha...though I don't think I would wear it in Singapore...ahahaaa
And yah..after all the fun, it was supposed to be time to shou shi xin qing and start school, but I cannot..really.
First off, the add/drop system here is kinda screwed up...there is one online system by the Registry and Examinations Section (like OAS) that administers electives, Business Admin courses (for my biz minor) has a separate online system by CUBA (and when successful, you still need to sign a add/drop form)..and the other subjects, you need to find the relevant teacher/office to sign on your add/drop form and submit it to the OAL for exchange students. What's more, the OAL deadlines are different from the schools' deadline and that caused a whole lot of confusion.
What's more, when Angie dropped COM3731 (One-minute film school) and I wanted it'cos something finally matched CS229, the place does not automatically come to me, cannot swap!! I was put at risk of balloting if the need arises, lucily it did not..and I managed to add one biz module in Phase 1, failed in Phase 2 and am still waiting for the results of Phase 3.
Another incident, I chose a module called "Appreciation of Mathematics" as a STS GER-PE, and it was supposed to be "C#E" which means that the course will be taught in Cantonese, but if anyone in the class does not understand, it will be taught in English. Alas, in class, when I made known that I didn't understand Canto, I was SNUBBED!! Yes, by two f***ing idotic sluts who left after knowing that class particpation took up 30% of course grade. F*** them, they said something I didn't catch nor understand, but the lecturer stopped them...but I heard worse stories like Cantonese being used in supposedly fully-taught-in-English courses...damn these people...
But I did meet nice people like Elizabeth from my management class, who spoke really good English, though when they group together they still like to speak Cantonese, but oh well...and the changing of classes here is real cool, they have like "Meet-Class-Bus" which comes out in huge numbers to ferry people from the mountain-top to the foot of it, vice versa...and it's really efficient (a far cry compared to the shuttle buses we have in NTU)
And so, it was a week of browsing around, and on Tuesday, I decided to my first laundry..haha..yes, I didn't even do that in NS...and so I cocked up again when I forgot the pin for my CU-Link card and the wrong instructions were posted on the wall. I rushed to the New Asia office only to be made to go down to the CU card centre on main campus and then back up again (seriously, it was quite a workout and my legs hurt from the days of slope-climbing) and I finally for the washing machine to start.
Then, when attempting to use the extractor, I inserted the card into the wrong reader and added credit to Washer 4 instead of Extractor 1...being typical Singaporean and didn't want to let anyone use my credit, I turned on the washing machine and let it run empty with no clothes inside...hahahaaa
So within the week, I got to know the NUS peepz better as Angie had Ann here now and she's not in school like most of the time? Hahaa...and we started meeting for dinner, in school and outside and then went to hall to talk cock, laugh and relac...
The view from Suqin's block at Chung Chi College (at the bottom of the hill)
Dinner on Friday at iHouse, Yvonne was the cook and Sam (Yongsheng's roomie and my PR coursemate) cooked soup..and we had an American and Mexican as guest..they weren't really used to the food so they didn't eat much...and I helped a little with the clean-up..haha..I feel useless..haha..sorry guys, I just cannot help in the kitchen when things are not all available and not in fixed places...and after dinner, we tried to teach Humburto (the mexican) how to play mahjong and it was real fun...hehe
I have finally made new friends here! Haha...and it's still Singaporeans...I guess you cannot say we don't have a culture..considering that people can identify us by the way we speak, and we do feel more comfortable with our own people...seriously...
Yeah, it seems like I have the best buddy amongst all...hahaaa...Jeff was in NTU for the whole of 2006 and he actually contacted me 1st...oops...hehe...anyways, so he was so kind to bring us around HK for the day. So, Siyi, Minbao and me went out (Yuanshe was meeting her friend and Angeline pang sei us because she was tried out totally). We had wanted to go Lantau, but since OAL will be organising a trip there in 2 weeks so we decided to just stay within TST and Central...oh yah...we met Jason from CityU who was also in Singapore for exchange in 2006...so it was quite a crowd and fun!!! And Minbao had the chance to practise her Canto...haha
So, we headed to Causeway Bay, found a Cha1 Can1 Ting1 to have lunch..and I order a HKD40 Udon noodles which was not bad, but I have been suan-ed ever since for ordering such expensive food...haha...oh well, I was hungry okay...and then we went to HK's Central Library via Victoria Park, which was flooded with domestic helpers out on the weekend, on the overhead bridges, in the park, everywhere!!!
Looks better than NLB on the outside and inside too...it's like a hotel...and they queue for their lifts...wow
Then we took a tram to Central...
Finally went to take the mid-levels escalators..nothing much lar...just that its long and brings you to many TVB locations...
THE Hong Kong police station...
Near Lan Kwai Fong, where the slope is where people gets drunk, or flag a taxi etc...
At the mid-levels, we proceeded down to the HK Zoo and Botanical Gardens..free of charge and a true green belt in the middle of Central...
The fountain in the zoo...
Minbao, Me, Jeff, Jason and Siyi..
Then, we went to HK Park where the old flagstaff house is..and the registry of marriage is too...
We then took a Star Ferry from Central back to TST...
Night view...
Night view again...taken by yours truly (borrowed a tripod from a random person..haha)
We then walked all the way from TST to Mongkok along Nathan Road..the all-so-famous one which I din visit in 2004...
And there are some lame photos (haha...) like posing with Wei Ta Nai (in different flabours) but I shalln't post them..cos Jeff was like "Take picture lar..because on exchange..." lolz...
We even contemplated staying out late enough just to try taking the Light Bus (Xiao Ba) back to CUHK..for the sake of it, but we din stay out late enough and it was more ex compared to the KCR...
Day 3 was pretty uneventful, considering the number of things we have completed the past few days, we decided to kinda sleep late. And I mean late. I practically slacked my day away in the hall, planning my timetable (which by the way is back to square one in the end) and headed out for the Welcome Dinner by the OAL. It was held well, at the Science Park (what you see in my pictures outside of my window). Yes, we met and had a bus to send us to the foot of CUHK for dinner and last year, they had Jumbo.
Anyway, I was assigned to the same table with Angie and the ang-mohs (yes, all 202 were there) were basically fascinated by everything they have seen in HK. And everything to them is like "wow, that's so cheap!" or "that's something new, i have never heard of it" and it sure was a rowdy night. Lucky for me they didn't provide alcohol...And the funny thing was they decided to play Bingo before the dinner started and we soon realise within the table that we either had the same cards or the same numbers arranged differently. After 5 players won, one number yielded 2 tables full of winners and they called the game off...sheesh...talk about bad planning..haha
The scene of the dinner at some restaurant named Happiness, crowd dispersing at the end of the dinner. And it was there that we finally met the other peepz from NTU: Siyi, Minbao and Yuanshe.
Day 4: City Tour!!! Hahaa...finally felt like a tourist all over again. Funny to say this, but I miss my Kang Kong, Cabbage and Xi Yang Cai after coming here. I mean, yes, I am getting all the meat, but the lack of any kind of veggies and fruits is making my feel weird too...and we were rewarded with a VEGETARIAN MEAL!! Haha...I mean it sounded bad initially, becos I was like, well I dun eat vegs..u know...but it was good, I am telling ya! Haha..then it was there that the Singaporeans decided to bond.
Clockwise: Me, Angie, Minbao, Yuanshe, Siyi, Jiahao, Liling,Huimin, Yong Sheng, Suqin (ET), Jinsheng, Yvonne and Alvin. Yes, all 13 of us decided to sit at one table leaving empty seats at other tables..haha...they are really cool peepz...more to come about them in later posts but let's keep it at that for now..hahaaaa
As for now, let the pictures do the talking...
The ang-mohs were fascinated by the praying and qiu1 qian1 and many of them queued up for it...and I only took pix of others..so yah...haha
We proceeded to the Peak tower, which has finally re-opened after a long renovation, and I can finally visit it since the last time I was here, the whole damn thing was closed. But we didn't have time except to go to the viewing gallery...
Inside the tower...
The all-so-familiar HK skyline...
Castles in the air...
Stunning sea view with clouds and sky...
The NTU peepz...
The gals from Singapore...
We think we saw TVB filming some drama down at the peak tower's entrance level, but it was too damn high up there to see who were the actors...=(
Then, they brought us to the Avenue of the Stars...and I took this panorama...colour a bit off, but u get the idea...
And the day comes to an end...
Will post more soon...haha..maybe more pics and less words, since the pictures can speak for themselves...
Okay, so some of you out there has been saying that people overseas aren't updating their blogs..like who reads mine anyway? Oh well...hahaaaa
But I have been here for over a week now, and it is high time to update before I forget all the nitty gritties...
Day 1 (Continued)
So anyway, the cleaning up of the room went underway and the floor was pretty filthy but nothing compared to Tekong. And the room got kina quiet and I had to turn on my MP3 playlist to accompany me (heard from many others who that too, with not many people back in the halls at that time). Dinner time sorta came and went, and I didn't want to venture out to look for a canteen not knowing anything at that point in time.
Lucky for me, one of my roommates decided to return that evening at about 8am and thus my dinner was fulfilled. Their rice is like a heap..a mountain full..with a drumstick, I felt it was a lot but I still ate it all (omg...I am so not gonna lose weight here). The canteen was in fact just opposite my hall. Sheesh... and oh yah, they have funny campaigns here like "Silent Tea Time" and "Eat Less Rice".
The former is you order food here by paying first and getting a receipt. When your food is ready, your number is called out. But during silent tea time, you refer to an electronic display board (like in a hospital). And with the heaps of rice they serve, they are trying to reduce wastage..only that my other NTU peepz says that no matter how little they say they want their rice, it will still be too much for them..haha
That night, I tried to get onto the internet, but was unable to as I have yet to obtain username and password from the IT services, so it was like one of the most miserable nights with nothing to do... I even tried to ask my buddy for his password but I guess it not a common practice here? Hahahaaa... and Angie had Ann to do that for her!!!
Day 2
Day of academic orientation. Was waiting for Angie (and she was a little late...hehe) and so decided to take some pics at a pavillion called 合一亭 which has a flight of stairs linking to Angie's hall, right beside mine.
It is actually the same view outside my window (but not blocked by anything)..so yeh..I can't complain much, since I have heard since that they do put exchange students in slightly larger rooms with slightly better view...oh well...
Anywayz, so we met up for breakfast at the New Asia Canteen and it was a lot of food with eggs, sausages, luncheon meat and Bo Luo Bao! And it costs like S$3...then we went on to check in at the Office of Academic Links (OAL) which is basically the equivalent of International Relations Office (but they can't call themselves that as HK is a SAR and they link up with the mainland). So after filling up a few forms, getting an extremely thick student handbook and a useless t-shirt which can't fit me, we went to the opening address at the Mong Man Wai Building, which is one of the newer teaching blocks and the most important building which links the top of the hill (where my college, New Asia College is) and the main campus (where most of my lessons are).
The auditorium was filled up by over a 100 students by the time we got there. We were told that there were 202 new exchange students this sem, and Austra-Asians (Asia + Australia + New Zealand) only took up 14%. We sure were the minority.
Opening address, course registration talk, health services talk, sports facilities introduction etc etc etc...and other programmes like Teaching in Hong Kong (rural communities) or Teaching in China, which I have yet to decide whether or not to participate in and that all took up like more than 3 hours till about 1 plus in the afternoon. We had lunch at the Benjamin Franklin Center (where the better foods are) after getting lost and thank god that the OAL people are heading for lunch as well. Mind you, we had a good taste of what the slopes in CUHK are like. It simply made us more determined to find shortcuts through buildings, whatever, just to siam the steep slopes and staircases.
After lunch, we headed out to get our CU-Link card (which is the matriculation card, but it allows you to add credits for printing/photocopying as well as for laundry, aircon whatever). Then, it was on to academic advising in the evening (Asian students were relegated to 4pm) haha...and we asked whatever we had on mind, which was not a lot, but it did clear some doubts over their semi-online, semi-manual, semi-auto course registration, which made me appreciate STARS so much...I know those in NTU now won't agree, but trust me, it's that bad. I have yet to settle my course register at this very moment.
We were basically sick of being stuck in campus, and wanted to head out. It was like 6pm before we could go out and the last shuttle bus within campus is only till 11:20pm, so we didn't go too far and ended up in Mongkok. And Angie, with her new phone given by her friends, has been busy being a tourist on campus..haha...
Sunset behind the Univeristy Library, behind it is the university adminstration building...
Turn around and this is the main walkway in main campus, with the prominent logo on the Medical building at the end...
As mentioned, Angie being touristy...=p
Finally had our 1st meal outside of school! After we ordered and got our receipt, we stupidly awaited for our numbers to be called. It was meant to be fast food and we waited...and waited..and waited. Only to realise here we were supposed to bring the receipt to the counter!!! Haha...and we just sat there stoning for nothing...and anyway, Angie said it was a ritual to take a pic, so here's my food...(anyway, more can be seen on her blog...)
So there we were, walking around Mongkok, to get our SIM cards (we were sold the wrong one without IDD...damn) and things like table lamp, extension plugs etc..which my stupid old hall lacks...and yah, she needed to get her socks and gloves as she was freezing in her room (I love the weather here, btw...)
And we spotted some movie-making, but have no idea who were the stars..and Angies being touristy again..and being tired out by all the rushing we had on the past 2 days..on the KCR back to school...lol (don't think she knows I took this pic..haha)
Yeah yeah, I know, I haven’t been updating this bog for the longest time. But since I don’t see any tags or comments, I can safely assume again that nobody reads my blog! Haahaa.. and this is what I actually typed on the day of arrival itself (i.e. 3rd Jan 07) but I didn't have internet access then, and when I got it, it was a hectic schedule and this is barely the time to update the blog when your whole room seems to be freezing cold (even with the windows closed, you can still feel the cold wind penetrate through it...)
Anyway, since this is an exchange, it is a ritual to keep blogging, at least to remind myself in the future what may/may not turn out to be a memorable experience. Spent the few days before departure trying to pack frantically for this trip, an extended one that leaves me truly alone – yes, even during NS, my clothes are brought back home to wash. And I almost brought my entire damn room over, and I wish I did. But the freaking bag was checked in at 35.6kg! Yes, and this excludes my backpack and my lappie and stuff.
The boarding gate was at the (again)freaking end of the terminal – and Angie was procrastinating so much that she was in fact the last passenger to check in at the gate. When I boarded the plane, all the overhead compartments were full and I had to store my stuff in the cloak closet. And after so many different airlines, SQ service is still the best. Only that the business class was so empty and the economy was almost filled; only a few pocket seats left and the women had to choose to sit beside me and not elsewhere.
The flight here was on the new SIA Boeing 777-300ER. And yes, it is all it has said it would be. The seats are indeed wider – I can sit comfortably without encroaching into the neighbouring seat and the leg room was also sufficient. What’s more, the LCD screen was freaking huge! But well, the flight wasn’t that long and I only managed to catch Open Season. My meal was Ah Yat's style braised pork with fried rice and vegetables…haha
Looking out of the window just before descent. The fog was so dense that I thought we were still passing through the clouds and the next second, the wheels touched down.
At the immigration, the officer was so damn blur that he did not know what to do with the letter I am supposed to hand it to him and he just stared, read my Visa, played around a few stamps and finally decided to stamp one onto my passport. Shrug, I don’t even know if it’s the correct one.
Getting to CUHK was really a nightmare, once you enter the school gate, the roads just keep going up, and up, and up, and up…you know what I mean. I am stuck at a hilltop now in Chih Hsing Hall in New Asia College. Oh yah, my address is:
Room 2L03 Chih Hsing Hall New Asia College Chinese University of Hong Kong Shatin, N.T.
I had set my expectations really low this time, since I read online that this was one of the older halls and an all-male hall, with majority of triple-sharing rooms. Yes, I got one of those, with two freaking PRCs. The thing is that I chose to stay in a college hall because it was meant to be staying with a local with a preference to stay with an international student. If not, I would have chosen to stay in the International House. Damn.
I was so lazy and just sat at my table and stoned for a while. It was definitely better than what you get in Sungei Gedong, but the fact is that it is still a sense of being lost when it all struck me that “Yes, I am alone in Hong Kong now.” Thank god I didn’t choose HKU or I will have no friends there. At least Angie is here.
Well, we checked in and I saw her nice room with the stunning view facing the harbour and the view outside my room is a disaster, but it is slightly larger. So give and take lar…at least everything else looks good, like the pantry, lobby etc.
The state of the room after moving in and mid-way through unpacking...
The view outside my room...I don't have a pic of the view outside Angie's room but it's gorgeous...
Now you see why...and her hall is the newest in New Asia College! And her study table has a lamp readily available, her entire block is security-coded, her power plugs are above (not under) the table...arrrgghhh!
Prior to coming here, I heard that you need to bring your own toilet paper. Yes, toilet paper! But then toilet paper seems to be supplied, but I guess on a monthly basis ‘cos they are full right now. Since we checked in after 5pm, the International Academic Students Programmed (IASP) was closed so we can only officially check in tomorrow and get our CU card, i.e. the matric card tomorrow. And because of that, this entry is not going up anytime soon because I have no internet! Yes, a night like this without internet is freaky. There is no DVB-T signal, no FM signal in my room. Yes, not even FM. And there is no dustbin, the bed mattress is damn thin, I don’t have my bolster, no table lamp, no dehumidifier in my wardrobe….this can go on forever, but to sum it up, the start was neither good nor bad, so I do hope I don’t have any bigger problems with my course registration (which is still present at this moment) or else I am so going to regret coming to CU.
So, many more updates to go...will try to blog soon...ciao!
